| About Marrakech
Marrakech, also called "the pink city", is beautiful located close to the Atlas mountains. Most days you can see blue mountains covered with snow over the rooftops, and in 3 hours by car you can reach the desert of Sahara. Marrakech has been a resort for many years. It is a melting pot with a mixture of traditional cultures and modern western lifestyles. In the part of the town called the "new Medina" (Guliez), you can get all the luxury you can afford, and you find stores with the latest fashion and night clubs. The setting of Marrakech is splendid, exceptionally beautiful, and the liveliness is never ending. It is the second largest city of Morrocco (after Casablanca), with a population around one million. Snake charmers sit outside refined palaces. Riotous marketplaces sell all kinds of exotic stuff, and the mysterious old Medina contains nearly two miles of secret passages. Here you also find the largest market place in Africa. Mopeds, mules and Mercedes dart around, yet time seems to move slowly. The Atlas Mountains make a thrilling day trip, while city sights include tombs, souks, palaces, mosques and baths (Hamman). Many people also take a one day or two days trip to the beaches to the beautiful small old town Essaouira on the Atlantic coast 2,5 hours by car or bus from Marrakech.
Tore Kjeilen, a Norwegian specialist in modern Islam, says "Marrakech is not only a fantastic city, it is also a symbol of the Morocco that once was, and which still survives here. What is central in order to understand the position that Marrakech has, is that it never has been Arabic, always Berber. While Arabs and Berbers mingle in most parts of Morocco, Marrakech remains a bastion of Berber culture. It was its own centre in the struggle against the French earlier this century, and could have become a capital in a country away from Morocco if history had wanted it differently. Anyway, its position has been strong for such a long period, that it is from 'Marrakech' that 'Morocco' is derived."
